Lana Del Rey
Internet darling Lana Del Rey got a record deal after her first single "Video Games" went viral in 2011, and her debut is hitting the streets this January. With her soulful, haunting vocals, Del Rey has been called the "gangsta Nancy Sinatra," and if her album is filled with songs as good as the just-released "Born To Die" she may end up the Adele of 2012.
London-based Graffiti6-- AKA TommyD and Jamie Scott-- have been working together since 2008, but 2011 turned out to be a banner year, as the pop/ rock duo scored some major attention with songs featured on MTV's Teen Wolf, Basketball Wives, One Tree Hill, and the FIFA '12 video game soundtrack among others, and were recently noted as Push Artists by MTV and Artists to Watch by UK newspaper The Guardian.
This NY-based rapper made a name for himself by combining energetic hip hop with sensibilities of classic rock and melodic soul. His arsenal of mixtapes have flown fast and furious across the internet since 2009, and his first studio album-- including his hit single "Tonight is the Night"-- is expected later this year.
Piano-driven pop and rock is certainly on the rise, and there's few better at crafting uptempo piano-driven pop songs than the lovely Ms. Platten. In 2011 she scored a Top 30 hit with her incredibly catchy single "1,000 Ships," and managed to do it all without a major label record contract!
Scar on 45
Somber and melodic, haunting and catchy the UK-based Scars on 45 have been on a steady rise since forming in 2007. In 2011, the indie rockers were featured on TV shows such as One Tree Hill, Warehouse 13 and Supernatural, but it was the debut of their amazing single "Heart On Fire"-- and the song's appearance on Grey's Anatomy that really caught our attention. The social media savvy rockers will be embarking on their first US headlining tour in 2012, and plan to release their first full-length album this year as well!
