Behind the Light, Phillip Phillips’ second album, just released this May, and the singer is sharing his latest batch of tunes on the road with O.A.R., including a stop at Foxwoods this past weekend. Any fan of Phillips knows his love of guitar, and he wanted to focus on that on his sophomore album.
“I got to spend more time and sit with the songs and get to know them a little bit more,” he said. “I’m a guitar player first– I’m not a great guitarist but I like to do cool things if I can.”
“I feel this album shows different musical points, if it’s a guitar, or if it’s the drums, or the string arrangements. It’s a very musical album, which I really love,” he continued. “And the lyrics– I’m so proud of the lyrics as well– it has a band vibe, the whole album. The whole band that plays with me live played on the record. It has a very organic, live feel, because playing live is very important to me.”
Phillips admits he loves touring, and his frequent time on the road proves that point. He’s playing out with O.A.R. now and just wrapped a tour with John Mayer earlier in the year. He loves playing live so much, it doesn’t even matter to him who else is on the bill, he’s just going to do his thing and love it. “I love touring, I don’t care who it’s with. It would probably be weird if I was on tour with Celine Dion, that might be a strange fit,” he joked. “But I would love listening to her sing every night. We’ll see what this winter has in store.”
It took a lot of hard work just to get to American Idol, and now it seems like another lifetime’s worth of effort to move beyond the show and truly into his own, but Phillip is still glad to be on this musical journey. “I started playing guitar when I was 14 years old, and I knew I wanted to do something with music… if it was teaching or playing behind somebody,” he explained. “I didn’t start singing until I was 18, because I never thought I could sing. I knew I wanted to do something, but I didn’t know exactly. I started writing songs when I was 18 and I just fell in love with it. I wanted to play music for the rest of my life, but I didn’t know if it would really happen.”
But it did happen for Phillips, and he couldn’t be happier with where he is right now. “I’m blessed. I’ve got a couple albums out, I’ve gotten to meet some heroes, and some amazing artists, and musicians, and people in general,” he said. “To make new friendships and see the world, it’s been awesome. There’s a lot of cool people out there, and some strange ones… But I’m strange, too, so it’s okay.”
