Bonnie McKee’s list of songwriting credentials is pretty impressive! The American Girl singer has written hit songs for tons of artists including Katy Perry, Britney Spears, and Taio Cruz. She sat down with Damon Scott and Gina J. to chat about her foray into the performance side of being an artist; something that has always been her dream.
“I’m really grateful that I’ve been able to step out and have my own single and be making my own album and everything,” she said. “I wanted to be an artist, but I was broke. I had no hot water, no cell phone, I had no car, so I signed a publishing deal.”
Bonnie bubbles with contagious excitement as she talks about her upcoming EP, due out in the spring. Her plan is to create a video to accompany each song and “do a mini version of what Beyonce did,” she says.
She’s filming one in a few days and can’t wait for fans to see the Barbarella-themed vid laced with 1960’s-esque illusion tricks. Her only frustration? She’s currently on a juice cleanse and implies with snark that she’s “in a great mood” as a result.
She’s thrilled that “Roar” is up for Song of the Year, the category that recognizes songwriters. And on working with hit-maker Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald, she says, “The Doctor has taken good care of me.”
