Indie folk duo Alex & Sierra were the first band ever to win The X Factor, and since claiming their title they’ve been hard at work on their debut album. But they took some time to chat with Damon and Gina backstage at the GRAMMYs… See what they had to say about their new, musical experience.
Life has obviously changed for Alex Kinsey and Sierra Deaton since winning The X Factor, but what’s the most exciting development? “Getting to write our own music, with really amazing people,” Sierra explained. “We don’t have to do covers anymore, we get to come up with the sound we want to be singing.”
“We got a key to the city of Daytona, Florida,” Alex added. “It opens every door in Daytona, so we just go in uninvited.”
Since their big win under the tutelage of Simon Cowell, the duo have been in Los Angeles, writing and working with great people to develop their album. In fact, this is one of the first days off they have had since coming to LA!
While the X Factor win was a big surprise for the newcomers, they had previously auditioned for American Idol. “American Idol was kind of a happenstance,” Alex explained. “We went to Chicago for a wedding, and it was there, so we did it,” added Sierra. The group never did The Voice, so they have yet to complete the “trifecta” of singing competitions, but they were impressed by how authentic and non sensational The X Factor was backstage.
“The X Factor was great because of how genuine it all was,” said Alex. “It was not anyone telling us ‘You need to say this,’ it was just us talking. They would use that to explain who we were.”
After taking a few days off for the GRAMMYs, the duo plans to get back to work right away, crafting the best debut album they can. “We’ve been trying to get it out as soon as possible… in the next 3 or 4 months, I hope,” said Alex of their album. “We’re gonna do it as fast as possible and get the highest quality stuff come out.”
