The featured voice on Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ smash hit “Same Love” sat down with Damon and Gina backstage at the GRAMMYs! Mary Lambert opened up on how she became involved with the hip-hop duo’s hit song, her spin-off track, “She Keeps Me Warm”, and more!
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have earned seven Grammy nominations at this year’s ceremony thanks to their Platinum debut, The Heist. The album spawned five hit singles including “Same Love”, which is up for Song of the Year.
“Hollis, who sing on ‘White Walls’, recommended me,” said Mary, recalling her collaboration with the Seattle duo. “She called me, it was like two o’clock, and she was like, ‘Hey, you have about two to three hours before they want you in the studio. Can you come up with something?’ I was like, ‘Yep, you got it! Totally!’”
Being able to write and perform the chorus on the pro-LBGT anthem was very personal for Mary, as she struggled herself growing up lesbian in a Christian upbringing. “I was so grateful because this song is so much of my story,” she said. “I came out when I was seventeen in the church.”
Fans of the twenty-four year old singer-songwriter can pick up her second solo EP, Welcome to the Age of My Body, which she released last December. The lead single, “She Keeps Me Warm”, is a spin-off to “Same Love.”
“It is an offshoot of the song,” Mary explained. “It is a love song that just happens to be about another woman.”
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis will be performing live the GRAMMYs this Sunday night. Can we expect to see Mary joining them on stage?
“It is rumored,” she hinted. “I can neither confirm nor deny…”
