Sara Bareilles Ponders GRAMMY Gimmicks & Explains Her ‘Brave’ Endorsement
Sara Bareilles has caught the ear of The Recording Academy before, previously being honored with GRAMMY nominations for Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, thanks to her smash singles “Love Song” and “King of Anything.” But a recent Album of the Year nod for her latest release, The Blessed Unrest, really took the thirty-four year old singer-songwriter by surprise.
“It’s crazy,” said Bareilles when she met up with Damon Scott backstage at the Toyota Oakdale Theatre before her All-Star Christmas performance. “I had a whole other career before the one you are looking at,” humbly referring to her years playing in local coffee houses and clubs.
Joining Bareilles in the Album of the Year category at this February’s ceremony? Here’s how she breaks down her competition: “Pretty much really small artists like Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, and Daft Punk,” she said jokingly. “I am actually a huge fan of everybody in there.”
But don’t expect her to don a metallic helmet to try to keep up at the GRAMMYs… “I am going to have to show up in an egg or something,” she laughed. “Oh wait, they did that… somebody did that!”
In addition to Album of the Year, Bareilles has also received a Best Pop Solo Performance Grammy nomination for The Blessed Unrest’s lead single, “Brave.” The empowering anthem can be heard almost everywhere as of late, and it has most recently been featured in Windows commercials for tablets and smartphones.
“It was awesome,” she said on landing the endorsement with Microsoft, clearly not afraid of the mainstream spotlight that many artists once criticized. “I think it used to have a lot more stigma attached to it. I think artists were much more opposed to using film and TV in that way, and putting their songs in commercials. To me, it is such a great way to get people who wouldn’t normally hear your song to be able to hear it. It’s really cool.”
