Season 2 “American Idol” winner Ruben Studdard has signed on to join the cast of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” for the upcoming season.
Studdars, who proclaimed himself the “Velvet Teddy Bear” during American Idol, took the crown in 2002 by beating runner-up Clay Aiken by only 134,000 votes.
Since the show ended, Ruben Studdard has gone on to complete four albums, including his most recent “Love Is.”
He has battled weight issues for some time now, and lost 100 pounds from his more than 400 pound frame back in 2006.
“We’re from Alabama and we love to eat,” Studdard told TODAY co-host Meredith Vieira. Ruben also tried a vegetarian diet for some time.
The new season of “The Biggest Loser” premieres October 8 at 9/8c on NBC.
