Sometimes music videos are more like mini-movies, with a cinematic story (usually loosely) tied to the lyrics, but Bruno Mars went in a totally different direction for his latest video. “When I Was Your Man” features a decidedly vintage style video, highlighting Mars at his piano belting out the heartfelt hit… and little else.
But what would be a stark and simplistic video instead becomes an experiment in going as old school as possible. From the hazy, murky picture quality to the wonderfully retro editing (just look at all those wipes and fades!!), Mars’ new video feels as if it were pulled straight from the era of early 80’s love ballads.
It’s a simple, straightforward delivery and it really highlights the song… the modern, more cinematic music videos are certainly entertaining in their own right, but this is the sort of video to remind us of the early days of MTV, when production values took a back seat to shine the spotlight on a great tune.
Bruno Mars’ “Unorthodox Jukebox” is available now.
