Gold medal-winning gymnast McKayla Maroney is coming to Hartford this weekend as part of the Kellogg’s Tour of Gymnastics Champions (going down this Saturday at the XL Center!) and she called in to chat with Damon about going for the gold at the Olympics, and what she’s been up to since then!
Team USA gymnast McKayla Maroney admitted to Damon she doesn’t have a huge trophy room back home. “I actually don’t have that many trophies, I just have a billion medals,” she joked. Among her recent additions was the gold she scored at this Summer’s Olympics, which she says can really change everything. “It really is insane how much The Olympics can change your whole entire life,” she said. “All the media, and all the stuff that would totally happen after it all.”
The “stuff” that has happened since this Summer’s games has certainly been incredible for McKayla– not only is she touring for Kellogg’s Tour of Gymnastics Champions, she also met President Barack Obama! “He is the coolest! He let us sit in his Presidential chair.”
As much as McKayla loves to compete, she also likes the lack of medals in an event like the Tour of Gymnastics Champions. “That’s the cool thing about it,” she said of the upcoming event. “It’s a big show with all the past Olympians, past world champions, this year’s world champions and this year’s Olympians… it’s just a really big production.”
Not only is the tour lots of fun, there’s perks with it too– like free cereal! “[We] get tons of Kellogg’s cornflakes. It’s totally awesome!” On top of touring, McKayla is getting into acting, including a recent guest stint on The CW’s Hart of Dixie, but what’s next for the young gymnast? “Hopefully you’ll see me at the next Olympics,” she said. “That would be cool!”
