Revitalized Seattle grunge-rock gods Soundgarden have announced that they’ll be performing a “Live On Letterman” concert webcast the night before the release of King Animal, the band’s first studio album since 1996 full-length Down on the Upside.
Soundgarden will be rocking out songs from the new album as well as fan favorites during a live webcast from the world-famous Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on Monday, November 12. Watch the complete webcast here.
Later on that same evening, Soundgarden’s lead singer Chris Cornell is scheduled to perform solo as part of a special Hurricane Sandy relief benefit at New York’s Bowery Ballroom.
For Soundgarden fans outside of the New York area chomping at the bit to see their heroes live, the guys have also announced a slew of winter 2013 tour dates, with two-night stands scheduled for L.A., Chicago, San Francisco, New York City. They’ll also be playing their first shows in the band’s hometown of Seattle since the band’s current reunion.
“I just read some quotes where Dave Grohl is talking about the Foo Fighters taking a hiatus of an undetermined length, saying, ‘I want to be in this band forever, and that’s why we need to take a break.’ That’s perfectly described,” Cornell told Billboard recently regarding why he thinks Soundgarden shouldn’t have broken up when they did in the late ‘90s. “Did we need to split up and tell the world and the fans we’re splitting up? Probably not. It was time to take a breather from the business.”
More artistically inclined fans of the band can enter a contest to design the commemorative tour poster for the King Animal jaunt, with Soundgarden asking that submitting artists “use the album title as the theme to create a ferocious and primal design that embodies the untamed disposition of a King Animal.” The winner will receive $500. The submission deadline is December 21, and additional details can be found here.
Soundgarden has also just released a new music video for comeback single “Been Away Too Long.”
