OK Go Fire Back At Billy Corgan After Video Slam

Never one to mince words, the ever-quotable Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan took a backhanded swipe at the band OK Go when lamenting the current state of music videos.

“I love videos, but they’re just not effective right now… [not as much as] they were, say, 20 years ago,” Corgan said to Fuse earlier this summer. “Why are the most celebrated videos of the last five years basically just gimmicks as opposed to substantive things that are worth repeating? They’re more like cultural curiosities like, ‘Oh, look! They’re running on the treadmill,'” he continued, in reference to OK Go’s famous clip for the song “Here It Goes Again.”

“15, 20 years ago, a music video was something that was made by a label to sell CDs by their band,” said OK Go singer Damian Kulash in a video response. “We make our own videos. They’re not ads for the songs; they’re just another part of our creative output.

“I’m curious as to what Billy Corgan thinks a substantive video from the pre-Internet era is,” Kulash added. “I’m wondering how many of Billy Corgan’s videos Billy Corgan made.”

Most recently, OK Go penned the theme song for Morgan Spurlock’s sponsorship documentary, POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold. Meanwhile, Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins are prepping for their first-ever show in Manila.
