John Mayer Covers Lana Del Rey’s “Video Games”
Last month, John Mayer announced the unfortunate news that his upcoming tour to promote new album “Born and Raised” had to be cancelled due to throat granulomas which again affected John’s vocal chords. While Mayer was staying upbeat about the health concern, it nonetheless grounded him for the forseeable future. But John is a musician first and foremost, so nothing will stop him from making music, and he just released a cover of Lana Del Rey’s “Video Games” via his Tumblr account.
Despite his inability to include vocals, Mayer’s instrumental cover of Del Rey’s hit single is absolutely stellar. With the help of Binson Echorec, the haunting guitar line translates perfectly to John’s signature brand of twangy folk pop, and the result is a new spin on the song that’s every bit as movingly moody as the original by the up-and-coming Del Rey.
“Video Games” was the first single off Lana Del Rey’s debut album Born To Die, and helped to catapult the singer onto the radar, landing her on many “artist to watch” lists in 2011 (including our own here at 965 TIC). Since posting “Video Games” last Friday, Mayer’s cover of the song has racked up over 75,000 plays, proving there’s plenty of fans out there who hope for John’s speedy recovery and cannot wait for more from the singer-songwriter.
