The Boy Band Invasion: Everything You Need To Know
With so many boy bands tearing up the charts, it’s hard to separate the Brits from the Americans, the reality show contestants from the Beyonce collaborators, the R&B from the old school pop. Managing their TV appearances could be your full time job. So here’s a quick boy band cheat sheet.
One Direction is a British-Irish boy band formed during the 7th season of the UK’s X Factor.
Just this week, they made Billboard history, becoming the first U.K. act to have their debut album snag the #1 spot in the first week of its release.
They sold 176,000 albums and kept Adele’s 21 out of the coveted top spot. And if conquering the music world weren’t enough already, Nickelodeon announced they are developing a television show with the boys.
One Direction’s big single, “What Makes You Beautiful,” debuted at #28 on the Billboard Hot 100, which was the highest for a U.K. group since 1998.
This five-some is also a British-Irish band based out of London.
They’ve been popular in the U.K. for awhile, but they blew up here in the States after their hit single, “Glad You Came,” was covered on Glee.
When they stopped by AMP 97.1/Los Angeles, a crowd of giddy girls waited outside for a glimpse of them.
The Wanted are determined to break into the American music market, embarking on an exhausting series of promotional interviews and performances, including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Their U.S. debut album will be available in stores starting on April 24th.
Not all these new boy bands hail from across the pond. Big Time Rush is 100% American-born and raised!
The band was formed in 2009 after a nationwide casting call. They simultaneously signed on for a record deal and a Nickelodeon television show, so the PR machine was definitely working in their favor.
Their first album, BTR, peaked at #3 on the Billboard charts and they’ve capitalized on their tween appeal with not only the TV show, but 5 made-for-TV movies.
#1 Girl, their first album, reached the 7th spot on the Billboard charts.
