There’s a new hero behind Spider-Man’s mask in the brand new “Ultimate Spider-Man” comic book that comes out today… In the Ultimate spinoff of the long-running Marvel comic series, Peter Parker– the Spidey we’ve always known– died in battle with his arch enemy the Green Goblin. But now there’s a new Spidey making his debut… meet Miles Morales!
The new Spidey is named Miles Morales, he’s a half-African America, half-Hispanic teen from New York. While he’s clearly a new character, his story will have some strong parallels to Peter Parker’s, complete with learning that with great power comes great responsibility.
It’s a bold choice to change the ethnicity of the popular super hero, but it makes a lot of sense to keep the character modern… as writer Brian Michael Bendis said “It’s certainly long overdue. Even though there’s some amazing African-American and minority characters bouncing around in all the superhero universes, it’s still crazy lopsided.”
The new Spidey was partially inspired by actor-comedian Donald Glover (Community), who ran a semi-serious campaign last Summer to be cast as the new movie version of Spider-Man (ultimately, the role went to Andrew Garfield).
Ultimate Spider-Man #1 was released today, so check it out and see how Miles’ story compares to Peter’s!
