20 Things You Didn’t Know About Amy Winehouse

Whether you were a casual fan of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Amy Winehouse[/lastfm] or didn’t know a single thing about the English singer-songwriter, one thing is certain, she was way too young to die.  And while her cause of death still remains a mystery,we have 20 facts about the Grammy winner that will give you a more in-depth look into her short life.

20. Her full name is Amy Jade Winehouse and she was born in September 14, 1983 in Enfield, London, England.

19. Amy Winehouse had one brother, named Alex, who is 4 years older than Amy. She had no children of her own.

18. Her dad, Mitchell, was a taxi driver and her mom, Janis, was a pharmacist.

17. At around age ten, she founded a rap group named Sweet ‘n’ Sour (she was “Sour”). This came about because of her love for Salt n’ Pepa.

16. Amy Winehouse pierced her nose when she was 13.

15. In a 2007 interview with”Rolling Stone,” Winehouse revealed her childhood dream was to be a waitress on roller-skates, like the ones she’d seen in the movie “American Graffiti.”

14. Amy Winehouse was kicked out of Westminster, London’s “Sylvia Young Theatre School” for getting her nose pierced and “general slacker attitude,” according to “Rolling Stone.” She dropped out of school completely at 14.

 

13. Amy’s favorite drink was called the “Rickstasy”.  It’s 3 parts vodka, 1 part Southern Comfort, 1 part banana liqueur and 1 part Bailey’s.

12. Among her tattoos are an angel, a horseshoe, an ankh cross with eagle, a feather, a singing bird, an anchor, a lightning bolt, the words “Daddy’s girl,” three 1950s pin-up women, a Betty Boop, and her ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil’s first name on her left breast.

11. In 2007, Amy accused a paparazzi agency of taking pictures of her and being followed by them. She took legal action against them and the paparazzi agency was banned from photographing her and banned the photographers from following her within 100 meters of her home.

10. In May 2007, Amy married Blake Fielder-Civil in a secret ceremony in Miami. They divorced in 2009. He is currently in jail.

9. In her song “Rehab,” she mentions the names Ray and Mr. Hathaway. These are references to the soul singers Ray Charles and Donny Hathaway.

 

8. Amy had several musical influences, from Elvis to Busta Rhymes.  However, Winehouse’s favorite song was Carole King’s “So Far Away.”

7. Amy Winehouse became the first British female to win five Grammy Awards on the same night, which was on February 10th, 2008, including Best New Artist and Record of the Year for “Rehab.”

Her record label, Universal, released a statement that read: “We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of such a gifted musician, artist and performer.”

1. Singer Tony Bennett recorded a song with Amy for his forthcoming album, “Duets II,” which is scheduled for release on September 20, 2011.
