No Doubt’s “Desperate” Songwriting

Between caring for her kids, designing hot fashion and working out, finding time time for creativity is taking its toll on No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani.

The pressure to create is evident for Gwen as she heads into the studio to work on No Doubt’s first album since Rock Steady in 2001.

While her schedule may be busier now than it has ever been, she is persistent on fitting in time to write.

She told Q Magazine that she would write songs between 5pm and 12am, describing the sessions as “the horror of any creative person, to have to be creative between certain times.”

Could it be that she’s trying to construct something that’s no longer there? “We wish we were good enough to craft it and have a vision,” she continued, “but our songwriting process is sort of desperate – we’re just praying that something comes out.”

Stefani has been taking pointers from fellow star Prince over the years, who asked her “Do you ever just try and write a hit song? You know, instead of trying to be all arty about it?”

No Doubt’s new album is set to be released later this year and will feature new tracks like “Undercover,” “Settle Down,” “Easy,” “Heaven”, and “Dreaming The Same Dream.”

Here’s the video No Doubt single “Hey Baby” from Rock Steady. Will the band get it together and create an album as successful as past work?
