Kerry Collins’ Favorite TV/MOVIE Dads of ALL TIME

Dad’s like Ozzie Nelson, Ward Cleaver & Cliff Huxtable are boring, lame and not entertaining.  On the coat tails of 96.5TIC’s post of “Top Ten Bad TV Dads”, I thought I’d share my favorite TV/Movie Dads!

Al Bundy could be the most lovable loser ever!  He was a pig, a sexist, rude, crude professional shoe salesman who’s high point of his life was 4 touchdowns in one high school football game.  His wife was lazy & trashy, his daughter had THE reputation in school no parent wants their kid to have and his son was…well…maybe more of a loser than he was.  But underneath it all, Al loved his family and when he showed it on very rare occaisions, he came through BIG TIME!  Damn! I miss “Married With Children!”

Anyone my age definitely has Darth Vader as one of their all time favorite fictional dads!  He was the evil ruler of the galaxy, choked people with his thoughts, hunted his own son, cut off his son’s hand and murdered millions!  When he revealed to Luke Skywalker “I AM YOUR FATHER” has got to be one of the biggest twists in movie history.  And when it was all said and done, when the chips were down and it was either his son’s life of his own, he sacrificed himself to save Luke from the evil clutches of THE DARK SIDE!

I was too young to appreciate Archie Bunker when I was a kid, but when I was older I came to appreciate this good-hearted racist!  “All In The Family” was a groundbreaking show and I STILL cannot believe they got away with the humor they did in the 1970’s! (There’s NO WAY this show would fly today!)

Sean Connery’s portrayal of Indiana Jones’ father in “Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade” is CLASSIC!  The dynamic between him and Harrison Ford as an estranged father & son who reconcile on a mission to save the world from the Nazi’s was simply great.  My two favorite lines from the film are both toward the end.  After referring to Indiana as “Jr” through the whole movie, he calls him “Indiana” in an attempt to save his life and show he really loves his son.  Then, after they’ve saved the world,  he explains Indiana’s real name is “Henry Jones Jr” and Indiana named himself that after the family dog!

Poor Henry!  He tried so hard to keep Punky Brewester in line…and most of the time he had his work cut out for him.  But what a great character George Gaynes played!  A grumpy, hard nosed, lonely old man who’s heart is melted by an adorable orphan.  A definite classic!

Jim’s dad! Eugene Levy played this character PERFECTLY!  A nerdy pop who tries to teach his son about sex.  The quintessential line for his character HAD to be when he catches Jason Biggs having his way with the pie.  Instead of getting angry, he calmly tries to console his son who he knows is mortified by saying “We’ll just tell your mother that we ate it all”.  I’m very excited there’s a NEW American Pie movie with the original cast coming out!
