Last night, we were at a nightclub full of young twenty-somethings and the DJ played Shaggy’s “It Wasn’t Me.” While everyone kept dancing, we heard a girl ask her friend, “Who is this? It’s good, but I’ve never heard it.” That’s because it came out eleven years ago–when she was about 10-years-old. Yikes.

We started to think of all the dance songs that fell through the cracks, when ten years ago they used to light a fire to the dance floor. So once a week on Friday, we’ll bring you our Top Ten Dance Hits from a particular year. This time around we’ve chosen the dawn of the decade–2000.

Some of the songs are amazing; some of the songs are amazingly bad.

10. “Thong Song”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Sisqo[/lastfm]

We aren’t sure what is creepier–the content of this song, how women used to wear their thongs as accessories, Sisqo’s weird bleached-out hair, or the way the video for this song begins with a child holding up a pair of thong underwear.

Either way, we remember that this was one of our favorite guilty pleasure dance tracks while we were watching MTV’s Spring Break.

9. “Bye Bye Bye”-‘[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]NSync[/lastfm]

Arguably the best ‘Nsync song ever, we remember teenage girls memorizing the choreography for this dance and showing off their grooving skills for pep squad–complete with Britney-style crop top and pigtails. Everyone altogether–wave “Bye, Bye, Bye” three times!

8. “Blue (Da Ba Dee)”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Eiffel 65[/lastfm]

We apologize profusely for re-exposing you to this song. It probably took you about 5-10 years to finally get it out of your head.

This song used to be played on the radio all the time, especially after 9pm, when all the kids sported their Jnco pants (with glowstick pockets), pacifier necklaces, and rainbow clip-in dreads.

Now let’s all collectively forget about this song again before Lady Gaga covers it.

7. “There You Go”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Pink[/lastfm]

Back when P!nk actually had pink hair and had an edgier sound which made her uniquely different from a lot of the other pop stars of the day, this was our jam.

What we liked most about P!nk was her mix of R&B, rock, and supremely danceable party jams.  We wish P!nk would rock it like her old self, but “sometimes it be’s like that.”

6. “It Feels So Good”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Sonique[/lastfm]

British trance singer and DJ, Sonique, got dance club patrons of 2000 slowly gyrating while alternately manically bouncing to her song “It Feels So Good.”

We’re sure it wasn’t just the song that made them feel so good.

5. “One More Time”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Daft Punk[/lastfm]

Back before Daft Punk had completely developed their helmeted mystique, the French electronic DJ duo were cementing their reputation (and eventually their arena pull) as the biggest electronic artisans of the decades. Especially when they got everyone screaming “one more time.”

Talk about subliminal messages.

4. “Independent Women Part 1″-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Destiny’s Child[/lastfm]

Everyone knows what happened to Beyonce’s, errr, we mean Destiny’s Child. While every single member of the group was super-talented, Beyonce went her way as an “Independent Woman” and eventually became a timeless pop and R&B diva.

3. “Be With You”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Enrique Iglesias[/lastfm]

Handsome Latin lover, Enrique Iglesias, hasn’t really aged a bit in twelve years. He also pretty much sings the same kind of songs and wears very similar outfits. Wait, maybe Present Enrique is a cyber-clone of Past Enrique. We’ll have to see if Future Enrique starts to look about twenty or his mole comes back.

2. “It Wasn’t Me”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Shaggy[/lastfm]

The song that inspired this whole list, we remember being completely aghast as teenagers by the message behind this song.  Cheat on your girlfriend? Deny it! She catches you. Deny it!

Even though she is probably not a moron and you are obviously getting naughty with the neighbor, just deny it. Remember this mantra, preferably with a reggae-tinged beat behind you, “It wasn’t me!”

Because your girlfriend is obviously having a delusional seizure.

1. “Music”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Madonna[/lastfm]

Who can really top the Queen of Pop, Madonna? Virtually every year since the dawn of time (or the ’80s), Madonna has had one of the biggest dance hits of the year.

And how can we blame her when she obviously knows how “music makes the people come together.”
