[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Mariah Carey[/lastfm]’s self-titled debut album reached the top of the charts on March 2, 1991. The album included four number-one singles: “Vision Of Love,” “Love Takes Time,” “Someday” and “I Don’t Wanna Cry.” It was mostly written by Carey and producer Ben Margulies.

Mariah wasn’t even 21 years old when the album reached number one. She had been discovered three years earlier by record executive Tommy Mottola, who she later married in 1993, then divorced five years later.

“Mariah Carey” bumped [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Vanilla Ice[/lastfm]’s “To The Extreme” out of the number one spot. The album held on for 11 weeks, before finally relenting to “Out Of Time” from R.E.M.
