Ben Brantley, in the New York Times, writes, “‘Spider-Man’ is not only the most expensive musical ever to hit Broadway; it may also rank among the worst.” He also notes that since it looked like the show was becoming a never-ending work in progress, he and his editors decided to check it out on what was to have been opening night. (It’s brought down the ire of the Spider-Man crew, with a spokesman telling Entertainment Weekly the critics are piling on, and “UNCOOL!”)
Chris Jones in the Chicago Tribune: “Delayed openings, physical changes, fresh flying sequences, the toil of dedicated performers and even new musical numbers from U2’s Bono and The Edge, no less, cannot fix what should have been solved long before any human performer left the safety of the ground.”
The Hollywood Reporter’s David Rooney: “In an ungainly mess of a show that smacks of out-of-control auteurial arrogance, the parallel speaks for itself.”
If there’s a consensus, it’s that the story is not working. The guy playing Spidey, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Carney[/lastfm]’s Reeve Carney, is given a pass with most of the other actors for doing their best under trying circumstances.
