Last.fm Trends: Goodbye Elton John?
Elton’s cited a lack of interest from fans as one of his reasons, so we’ve got the Last.fm Trends team to look into how popular his music’s been of late, and who else fans might look to…
Seven tracks from his six-month chart are early 1970s hits, with 1994′s “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” the latest release. As the writer of the best-selling single of all time, Elton is never short of listeners – but in some ways he’s a victim of that success. With 1,475 listeners in the past six months, “Tinderbox” from last solo studio album The Captain & the Kid still only manages 80th place in his charts.
His Similar Artists reflect the story of the pop success he feels is now behind him: they center on artists most popular in the ’70s and ’80s, and with fans tagging Elton John with classic rock as well as pop, this is unlikely to change.
It does seem that in the absence of new material, most fans will be happy with the wide-ranging catalog they’re left with.
