Earth Day Countdown Content #5 – THE ROOTS
Coming in at Number 5 on Radio.com’s Green Artist Countdown is The Legendary Roots Crew, a.k.a [lastfm]The Roots[/lastfm]. Growing in popularity by the day as the house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, [lastfm]The Roots[/lastfm] have been tearing up the hip-hop scene for 10 plus years. They’re also no strangers to the idea of giving back to the community, schools, and the environment.

As another founding member of the Green Music Group, [lastfm]The Roots[/lastfm] took their act to action with their 6th Annual Roots Jam Session back on GRAMMY weekend. GMG partnered with the crew to help launch their green initiative at the Jam, which featured some all star collaborations.

At the event, artists were invited to sign limited edition numbered 6th annual Roots Jam Session Concert Posters, printed on recycled paper and designed by commissioned artist RIES, to be auctioned off with 100% of proceeds benefiting GMG. Furthermore, guests were invited to the GMG lounge to screen print logos from GMG and the 2010 Roots Jam Logo Contest Winners onto shirts from recycled materials with the help of Studio3. Upon entrance, guest were given necklaces from Red Star made out of guitar picks, while performers received bracelets made of recycled guitar strings from WearYourMusic.org. Additionally, all CO2 emissions from the night were neutralized through the support of renewable energy.
The band has been at it for 6 years now with their pre-GRAMMY Jam. Check out this video from the Green Carpet back at the 4th Annual Roots Jam Session. (Even Michael Rappaport gets in on the action)
The Earth Day Green Artist countdown continues tomorrow. We’re counting down the 10 greenest artists of the year, and capping it off with a live audio stream of the Earthday Birthday concert in Atlanta on Sunday, April 25th; featuring [lastfm]Ben Harper and Relentless 7[/lastfm].
